What is Act 89?

Act 89 Services were established by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1974 to provide auxiliary services to school children enrolled in nonpublic schools. Those services include guidance, counseling and testing, psychological, remedial, speech and hearing, as well  as services for exceptional children and for the improvement of the educationally disadvantaged and other secular, neutral, nonideological services of a  supplementary and remedial nature.

Riverview Intermediate Unit 6, as the designated agency for providing Act 89 services, selects and administers the       delivery of services to nonpublic schools through consultation with participating nonpublic school entities.  Local Act 89 services include reading, math, speech, and hearing services as well as special needs consultant services.  Other services may be provided subject to the limitations of budgetary allocations.
