Special Education

  • The Special Education Division at Riverview Intermediate Unit provides a variety of high-quality instructional programs and support services that assist local school districts in fulfilling their obligation to meet the needs of students with disabilities. A staff of specialists works with students, parents, and school district personnel to assure the appropriate development of each learner.

School age programs include: Life Skills Support, Emotional Support, Multidisabled Support, and Autistic Support.  We also offer Speech, Hearing, Vision, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Social Work and Psychological support services.

Other services may also include:  transition, assistive technology, behavioral, transportation, extended school year and surrogate parent training.

RIU6 operates an Early Intervention (EI) program designed for children from age three up to kindergarten registration.  The EI program consists of services and supports designed to help families with children who have developmental delays.  Delays may include: speech, language, problem solving, vision, hearing, social, physical and/or emotional.  EI staff will work with the child and their family to enhance the child's development and learning.

The Training and Consultation Team (TaC) provides professional development and support to educators and administrators in the school districts of RIU in the areas of assistive technology (AT), behavior, transition, least restrictive environment and Response to Instruction and Intervention (MTSS).  Services are customized to each audience and based on effective practice.
